In 2021, S. Nicholl Furniture launched a new division of the company, Whitwell Sawmill – a small wood yard and sawmill specialising in kiln dried locally sourced timber. The sawmill was launched due to Simon’s desire to change the way we make use of the wood in the UK. Much of the naturally grown English timber is wasted, chopped up and used for firewood. Yet each piece is beautifully unique and can made into something striking for your home. Here at S. Nicholl Furniture we feel passionately about reducing the amount of imported timbers, and the creation of Whitwell Sawmill helps to make this mission possible in the local area.
All of the wood at Whitwell Sawmill has been sourced within a 30 mile vicinity and we know the history of each piece. We specialise in waney edge timbers in a large variety of wood types. We work with various local businesses and individuals to build our collection of English timbers. We have our own sawmill and kiln on site. At any one time we have planks available to buy, timber drying in the kiln, pieces waiting to go into the kiln and logs waiting to be planked on the sawmill. Each piece of timber is unique and documented so you will know exactly where it came from, why it came down, when it was cut and when it was kiln dried. Simon is passionate about encouraging the use of local timber that has very low mileage and has not been part of mass felling.
Through Whitwell Sawmill we offer wood offcuts for small projects, larger planks in various wood species or we can even discuss a fully bespoke furniture build using our sawmill timber. On any timber purchased from us we offer additional workshop services such as cutting, flattening, sanding and finishing to the boards.
Whether you are a fellow furniture maker, carpenter, builder or an individual who appreciates the beauty of English timber, Whitwell Sawmill offers a sustainable alternative to imported wood. Feel free to contact us through our sawmill website with your requirements or make an appointment to come and visit us.
